BREAKING: Mojtaba Khamenei Ascends to Supreme Leadership Amid Regional Conflict
9th Mar, 2026

In a historic and defiant move following the unprecedented escalation of the conflict, Iran has officially entered a new era. On March 8, the Assembly of Experts—the 88-member body responsible for the country’s highest leadership—released a formal declaration appointing Mojtaba Khamenei as the third Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic.

The announcement comes just days after the reported death of his father, Grand Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, during a joint U.S.-Israeli military strike on February 28.

Born in 1969, Mojtaba is the second son of the late leader. His ascent is marked by immense personal tragedy; reports indicate that his mother, wife, son, sister, and brother-in-law all perished alongside the senior Khamenei in the February 28 air raids.

The Assembly’s statement painted a grim picture of the conditions surrounding the vote:

"During this period, the Secretariat of the Assembly of Experts was targeted and bombed, resulting in the loss of several staff members and security personnel. Amidst a state of intense warfare and under direct threat from the enemy, the Assembly convened an emergency session, fulfilling its constitutional mandate to select a new leader."

Invoking Article 108 of the Iranian Constitution, the Assembly announced that Mojtaba was chosen by an "overwhelming majority." The council paid tribute to the 47-year "sagacious governance" of the two previous leaders, built on the principles of "dignity, independence, and strength."

The appointment is a direct challenge to Washington and Tel Aviv. U.S. President Donald Trump has voiced his firm opposition to a Mojtaba succession on multiple occasions, calling such an outcome "unacceptable." Simultaneously, Israel has issued stark warnings, characterizing anyone who assumes the role of Supreme Leader to oppose their interests as a "legitimate target."

The Iranian military apparatus has signaled its total alignment with the new leadership. On March 9, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran issued a resolute statement via the Mehr News Agency:

●Unwavering Loyalty: The armed forces pledged to serve under the command of Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei.

●The Mission: To defend the "interests and security of the nation" with more resolve than ever before.

●The Final Stand: The military vowed to resist the enemy "until the last breath and the last drop of blood."
