The 2026 Winter Olympics opening ceremony will take place from February 6 to 22 in Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo. This marks the first time in Winter Olympic history that the Games are being co-hosted by two cities located over 250 miles apart.
Although the opening ceremony is not until Friday, the first event—the mixed doubles curling round-robin—has already commenced at the 70-year-old Cortina Olympic Curling Centre. Just five minutes into the session, a sudden power failure plunged the venue into darkness, forcing four simultaneous matches to a halt as lights, scoreboards, and broadcasting equipment failed. Fortunately, backup power was restored within five minutes, preventing any substantial delays. Most impressively, the athletes remained composed and unaffected by the unexpected disruption.
Their professional poise was particularly commendable. Swedish players hummed along while mimicking guitar playing with their ice brushes, British athletes danced in the dark to stay relaxed, and the defending champions from Italy used the break to fine-tune their tactics. Ultimately, the results remained unaffected, with Sweden defeating South Korea 10-3 and Canada beating the Czech Republic 10-5. Following the incident, the organizing committee acted swiftly to overhaul the electrical facilities, ensuring no further issues for subsequent matches.
Competition continues tomorrow in Milan-Cortina, starting with more curling, followed by alpine skiing practice sessions. We will also see highlights from the women’s ice hockey preliminaries and luge training. While it is only the eve of the Games and the official opening is yet to come, there is already no shortage of thrilling sports action to enjoy.
