In a speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, on the 21st, Donald Trump declared Greenland to be a "core national security interest" of the United States. He announced that the U.S. is seeking to immediately enter negotiations for the acquisition of the island, while clarifying that the U.S. would not use military force to seize it.
On the same day, Trump posted on social media that, following his meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, a framework for a future agreement regarding Greenland and the broader Arctic region has been reached. He stated that if the plan is finalized, it will be "highly beneficial" to the U.S. and all NATO members. Consequently, he announced a suspension of the tariffs on eight European nations originally set to take effect on February 1st. He also noted ongoing discussions regarding the U.S.-led "Golden Dome" missile defense system, which involves Greenland. The negotiation team will be led by Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Special Envoy Steve Witkoff.
Trump’s obsession with Greenland is difficult to justify based solely on the island’s intrinsic value. While Greenland holds undeniable strategic and economic weight—serving as a base for the "Golden Dome" system, a gateway to emerging Arctic shipping routes, and a hub for rare minerals—these interests could theoretically be secured through bilateral agreements with Denmark or within the multilateral framework of NATO. Outright sovereignty is not strictly necessary for utility.
Therefore, a more significant motive may lie behind Trump’s actions: using Greenland as a lever to pressure, divide, and dismantle European unity.
·The "Long Game" Narrative: Unlike the rapid escalation seen in Venezuela, the claim over Greenland has spanned two presidential terms. By maintaining a stance of "claiming without taking" and "threatening without acting," Trump creates a persistent narrative that tests the limits of European establishment elites.
·Exposing Vulnerability: This tactic highlights the perceived weakness and compromising nature of European leadership, exposing deep-seated internal divisions and contradictions.
·Subverting the Order: The ultimate goal appears to be the subversion of the liberal international order and values that Europe champions. By creating chaos and uncertainty, it fosters a political vacuum for pro-Trump right-wing movements to seize power within European nations, eventually achieving a total transformation and realignment of the continent under U.S. influence.
